New Afton is proud to support A Way Home Kamloops by donating a new air conditioning and furnace unit through our Community Investment Program, with support from our partners at Interior Plumbing and Heating who installed the new units at A Way Home’s facility.
“Thanks to this community partnership we have been able to update an extremely old HVAC system, making the home more comfortable and saving the society vital funds,” said Tangie Genshorek, A Way Home Executive Director. “This home is a safe place for the youth and an important investment for the society, so this contribution serves local youth well in both the short and long term.”
A Way Home Kamloops is a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and ending youth homelessness in Kamloops and across British Columbia. They provide essential housing and support services to youth at risk of or experiencing homelessness including prevention, housing, employment, education, and support.
According to A Way Home, one significant pathway into youth homelessness is aging out of the foster-care system at age nineteen, often referred to as the “super-highway” to homelessness. Youth aging out face numerous challenges, including poverty, trauma, discrimination, and a lack of housing or support resources to meet their developmental needs. Many young people do not have the privilege of family support and need a community to help bridge their transition to adulthood while fostering interdependence.
Want to help? A Way Home Kamloops is seeking community donations of gently used clothes hangers and framed artwork for their new 39-unit building for youth. Donations can be dropped off at 622 Tranquille Rd on Wednesdays between 2:00 and 4:00 pm until Feb. 28th.
