New Gold continues to advance its commitment to water stewardship through the ongoing improvements to water governance and transparent reporting.
In 2023, Rainy River achieved an externally verified AAA rating for the Towards Sustainable Mining Water Stewardship Protocol. This is the highest level of assessment and demonstrates New Gold’s commitment towards water and the dedicated focus it requires. In 2025, New Gold completed work to maintain this rating, including undertaking an internal audit on the Water Stewardship and Tailings Management protocols. Team members from the New Afton Mine in Kamloops, British Columbia travelled to the Rainy River Mine near Fort Frances, Ontario to complete the internal audit, which allowed for additional cross-company collaboration and engagement.
“Taking the time to do these internal audits, gave us an opportunity to gain new perspectives on the different challenges and commitments that our team members are faced with,” said Karien Scheepers, Environmental Engineer-in-Training at the Rainy River Mine.
“This task provided an opportunity to embrace the New Gold Value of Collaboration and to capitalize on the experience and knowledge at New Afton,” said Emily O’Hara, Manager of Water Strategy and Stewardship. “The benefit of developing working relationships across the business provided tremendous value to our teams.”
As part of this work and to improve the standard of our external water reporting, for a third year in a row, EMM Consulting completed a third-party verification of water data reported in New Gold’s 2024 Environment, Social and Governance Reports and the Rainy River Annual Compliance Reports. This was the third year New Gold obtained external verification, and the findings again identified no fatal flaws with reporting and has resulted in ongoing continual improvement of our reported data. The findings for 2024 only found one high priority finding: review the Groundwater Monitoring Report against approval condition objectives.
New Gold welcomes feedback on our external reporting and will work to incorporate the recommendations in the 2024 reporting. Any further feedback or questions on the 2024 ESG Reports can be directed to sustainability@newgold.com.
